Product Description

“Monolithic Sidewalk Begins.” A vintage Scarborough street sign.
Designed by Astrid. Variety of shirts and hoodies available in many colours. Sold through RedBubble.

A sign from the former city of Toronto borough of Scarborough.

“Monolithic Sidewalk Begins” was seen where sidewalks began to run immediately alongside to the street with no easements. The sign was intended for city snow ploughing crews to avoid pushing snow onto the sidewalk so that it could still be used by pedestrians.

A companion sign, “Monolithic Sidewalk Ends,” tinted in green, let crews know to resume ordinary ploughing routines. The sign’s origins probably date back to at least the 1960s or 1970s and issued by Scarborough. A few of these signs are still found around the east end of Toronto, but no new ones would have been added after 1997.
